General Questions

Q: What is STS?

STS (Standard Transfer Specification) is an open standard for prepaid metering that enables secure, interoperable token-based vending systems. Developed by the STS Association, it ensures meters from different manufacturers can work with the same vending system, providing flexibility and security for utilities and consumers.

Q: How does prepaid metering work?

Prepaid metering works by requiring customers to purchase credit (tokens) in advance. These tokens are entered into the meter using a keypad or CIU (Customer Interface Unit). The meter then deducts credit as energy/water/gas is consumed. When credit runs low, the meter alerts the customer, and can disconnect supply when credit is exhausted if configured to do so.

Q: What are the benefits of prepaid metering?

Prepaid metering offers numerous benefits: no unexpected bills, better consumption control, reduced operational costs for utilities, elimination of meter reading, improved cash flow, reduced non-technical losses, and real-time consumption monitoring for both utilities and consumers.

Q: How long has afmeter been in business?

afmeter was founded in 2003 and has over 15 years of experience in smart metering solutions. We have grown from a small workshop to a global leader, with 500,000+ meters deployed in 50+ countries across 6 continents.

Technical Questions

Q: What communication options are available?

Our meters support multiple communication options including LoRaWAN, GPRS/4G, PLC (Power Line Communication), RF (Radio Frequency), and cable communication to CIU. The choice depends on your specific requirements, network infrastructure, and project scale.

Q: What is DLMS/COSEM?

DLMS/COSEM (Device Language Message Specification/Companion Specification for Energy Metering) is an international standard for meter data exchange. It enables interoperability between meters and data collection systems, supporting remote reading, configuration, and management of smart meters.

Q: How accurate are your meters?

Our energy meters meet Class 1.0 and Class 2.0 accuracy standards (with Class 0.5S optional for three-phase meters). Water meters achieve R100, R160, and R250 accuracy levels. Gas meters meet Class 1.5 and Class 1.0 standards. All meters are tested and certified to international standards.

Q: What anti-tampering features do you offer?

Our meters include comprehensive anti-tampering protection: magnetic field detection, cover removal detection, reverse energy flow detection, neutral missing detection, voltage imbalance detection, and event logging. Some models also include physical seals and security screws.

Q: What is the battery life?

Battery life varies by model: our water meters feature 10-year battery life using high-capacity lithium batteries with ultra-low power consumption. Energy meters typically offer 5-7 years of battery life. Gas meters provide 5+ years of battery life. All batteries are field-replaceable.

Installation Questions

Q: Can I install the meters myself?

We always recommend installation by qualified electricians, plumbers, or authorized technicians. Proper installation is crucial for safety, accuracy, and warranty validity. Our technical support team can provide installation guides and remote assistance.

Q: What tools are needed for installation?

Basic installation requires standard tools: screwdrivers, wrenches, wire cutters/strippers, and a multimeter for electrical checks. For some models, special configuration tools may be required for initial setup and commissioning, which we can provide.

Q: Do you provide installation training?

Yes! We offer comprehensive installation training for our partners and customers. Training can be conducted on-site, at our facility, or via remote sessions. Topics include meter installation, CIU pairing, system configuration, troubleshooting, and best practices.

Q: What is the typical installation time?

A single meter installation typically takes 30-60 minutes, depending on site conditions and complexity. Full AMI system deployment varies by project scale. We can provide detailed project timelines and installation schedules during the planning phase.

Q: Are your meters suitable for outdoor installation?

Yes! Most of our meters are designed for both indoor and outdoor installation. Our water meters feature IP68 waterproof rating, making them suitable for underground and challenging outdoor environments. Energy and gas meters offer IP54 protection. Always check the specific product specifications.

Maintenance Questions

Q: What maintenance is required?

Our meters are designed for low-maintenance operation. Recommended maintenance includes: periodic visual inspections, battery replacement when indicated, verification of seal integrity, and occasional firmware updates for smart models. We provide detailed maintenance schedules in our product manuals.

Q: How often should batteries be replaced?

Battery life varies: water meters (10 years), energy meters (5-7 years), gas meters (5+ years). Most meters include low-battery alerts well in advance of depletion. We recommend keeping spare batteries on hand and planning replacements during scheduled maintenance.

Q: Do you provide firmware updates?

Yes! For our smart meters with communication capabilities, we provide firmware updates to add features, improve performance, and enhance security. Updates can be deployed remotely via the AMI system or through local maintenance tools.

Q: What warranty do you offer?

We offer standard warranties ranging from 2-5 years depending on the product type. Extended warranties are available for larger projects. Our warranty covers manufacturing defects and workmanship issues. Full warranty terms are provided in our sales documentation.

Q: Do you offer technical support?

Absolutely! We provide comprehensive technical support via email, phone, and remote assistance. For larger projects, we can dedicate on-site support teams during deployment and commissioning. Our support team is available to help with installation, troubleshooting, and system optimization.
